Meta tag generator
This meta tag generator writes the title, meta description, canonical, robots, Open Graph and Twitter card tags for a page. Fill in the fields, check the Google search preview, then copy the HTML.
How to use the meta tag generator
- Page title. Say what the page is about, with the main topic first. The counter turns orange past about 60 characters.
- Meta description. Sum up the page in one or two sentences. Aim for about 155 characters or fewer.
- Page URL. Paste the full address, starting with https://. It is used for the canonical link and the Open Graph URL.
- Site name and social image. The site name shows above the title in the preview. The image is the picture people see when the page is shared.
- Robots. Leave index and follow selected unless you want the page kept out of search.
- Copy. Press Copy HTML and paste the tags inside the head of your page.
Empty fields are skipped, so you only get the tags you have filled in.
What this SEO meta tag generator writes
Each tag has one job. Some are read by search engines and some by social networks.
| Tag | What it does | Read by |
|---|---|---|
| title | Names the page | Google, browsers |
| meta description | Suggests the text under the title | Google, Bing |
| link canonical | Names the main URL for the page | Search engines |
| meta robots | Allows or blocks indexing | Search engines |
| Open Graph tags | Title, text and image for shared links | Facebook, LinkedIn, chat apps |
| Twitter card tags | The same, for posts on X | X |
Worked example
The tool opens with a sample page for a furniture workshop.
- The title is 48 characters, so it fits within about 60.
- The description is 139 characters, so it fits within about 155.
- The title has an ampersand in it. In the HTML it is written as &, which is the safe way to write that character inside a tag.
- Quotes and angle brackets are escaped the same way, so text you type can never break the tag around it.
The Google search preview cuts long text and adds three dots, the way a real result does. Google measures the width of the text, not the number of characters, so the real cut can land a few characters earlier or later.
Things to know before you paste
- Google may rewrite your title and description. It often builds the snippet from text on the page when that fits the search better. A clear, accurate meta description is still the best way to suggest one.
- The meta keywords tag is not included. Google ignores it, so there is nothing to gain from adding it.
- The lengths are guides, not rules. About 60 and about 155 characters are where results tend to be cut on a desktop screen. Nothing bad happens if you go over. The end is just hidden.
- Be careful with noindex. It removes the page from Google. The page must stay open to crawling for the tag to be seen, so do not block it in robots.txt as well. Build that file with the WordPress robots.txt generator.
- Social image size. 1200 x 630 pixels works well for Open Graph tags. Check other sizes with the aspect ratio calculator.
- WordPress sites. An SEO plugin such as Rank Math or Yoast SEO already prints these tags. Type your title and description into the plugin and do not paste a second set.
Meta tags describe the page. To describe what is on it, such as a business, a product or a list of questions, add structured data with the schema markup generator.
How this meta tag generator was checked
Built by Rasel Hakkani, WordPress developer at Swift Web Dev. The generated HTML was checked line by line against a hand-written version, and titles containing ampersands, quotes and angle brackets were read back by a browser to confirm they come out exactly as typed. The search preview is an approximation: Google cuts results by width, not by character count.

Meta tag generator questions
Which meta tags does Google use?
Google reads the title, the meta description and the robots meta tag. It also treats the canonical link as a strong hint about which URL to show. Google ignores the meta keywords tag, so this generator leaves it out.
How long should a meta description be?
Aim for about 155 characters or fewer. There is no fixed limit. Google cuts the snippet to fit the width of the result, so the cut changes with the device and the letters used.
Why does Google show a different title or description?
Google may rewrite both. It often builds the description from text on the page when that matches the search better. It can also change a title that is too long, stuffed with keywords or the same on every page.
Do meta tags help a page rank?
The title helps Google understand what the page is about, so it matters. The meta description is not a ranking signal, but a good one can win more clicks. Open Graph and Twitter card tags only change how shared links look.
Where do I paste the meta tags?
Inside the head section of the page, before the closing head tag. On WordPress, an SEO plugin such as Rank Math or Yoast SEO already adds these tags, so enter your title and description in the plugin instead.
Is the meta tag generator free?
Yes. It runs in your browser, needs no account, and nothing you type is sent to a server.
