PNG to WebP converter

This PNG to WebP converter makes smaller images in your browser. Add PNG or JPG files, set the WebP quality and download each result. You see the original size, the new size and the saving for every file. Your images never leave your device.

How to use the PNG to WebP converter

  1. Add images. Click the box to choose files, or drag them onto it. PNG and JPG both work, and you can add several at once.
  2. Set the quality. 80 is a good place to start. Move the slider or tap a preset. Every file is converted again when the quality changes.
  3. Compare. Each row shows the original size, the WebP size and how much smaller the file is. The thumbnail is the real WebP, not the original.
  4. Download. Each file has its own button. It is saved with the same name and a .webp ending.

Nothing is uploaded. The conversion runs on your device, so it is safe for client work and private photos.

How the tool converts PNG to WebP

Your browser decodes the image, draws it on a canvas at the same pixel size and encodes that canvas as WebP at the quality you picked. Width, height and transparency stay the same. Only the way the pixels are stored changes.

Percent saved = (Original size − WebP size) ÷ Original size × 100

Worked example

A PNG screenshot is 840 KB. The WebP comes out at 210 KB.

  • Size removed: 840 − 210 = 630 KB.
  • Share of the original: 630 ÷ 840 = 0.75.
  • The WebP is 75% smaller.

Those numbers are only an example. How much you save depends on the image. Photos and screenshots with soft gradients often shrink a lot. Small flat graphics that PNG already stores well can shrink very little, and now and then the WebP comes out larger. The converter shows the real sizes for your files and tells you when a WebP is bigger, so you can keep the original.

What the WebP quality number means

  • 60, small file. Good for thumbnails and background images. Fine detail gets softer.
  • 80, balanced. The usual choice for photos and page images.
  • 95, high quality. Hard to tell apart from the original. Use it for product photos and images with small text.

PNG, JPG, WebP or SVG?

Format How it stores the image Transparency Best for
PNG Pixels, no quality loss Yes Screenshots, logos and source files
JPG Pixels, some quality loss No Photos
WebP Pixels, with or without loss Yes Photos and graphics on web pages
SVG Shapes, sharp at any size Yes Logos and icons

WebP is made for web pages. Smaller images load faster, and that helps your Largest Contentful Paint score when the main image on a page is a photo. For a logo or an icon, an SVG is usually better still. If you only have the SVG and need pixels, use the SVG to PNG converter.

Before you swap images on your site

  • Browser support. Current versions of Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari all display WebP images.
  • WordPress. WordPress has accepted WebP uploads since version 5.8. Upload the file to the media library like any other image.
  • JPG to WebP. A JPG has already lost some detail. Converting it compresses it a second time, so start from the best copy you have and keep the quality at 75 or above.
  • Resize first. A photo that is 4000 pixels wide is too big for most pages at any quality. Scale it to the size it is shown at. The aspect ratio calculator gives you the matching height.
  • Photo details are removed. Camera data such as the location and the date is not copied into the WebP.
  • Keep your originals. Detail removed by a lower quality setting cannot be brought back.
  • Saving WebP. Some older Safari versions cannot save WebP from a web page. If yours cannot, the converter says so. It never hands you a PNG with a new name.

When the images are in place, write the page title and description with the meta tag generator.

How this converter was checked

Built by Rasel Hakkani, WordPress developer at Swift Web Dev. The converter was tested in Chrome with a transparent PNG and a JPG. Each downloaded file was confirmed to be a valid WebP with the same pixel size and transparency, and the sizes on the page were compared with the real file sizes. It has not been tested in every browser.

PNG to WebP converter questions

Is the PNG to WebP converter free?

Yes. It runs in your browser with no sign up and no watermark. You can convert as many images as your device can handle.

Are my images uploaded to a server?

No. The conversion happens in your browser, on your device. Nothing is sent to a server, so it is safe for client work and private photos.

Does WebP keep a transparent background?

Yes. WebP supports transparency, so the clear areas of a PNG stay clear in the WebP file.

Can I convert JPG to WebP?

Yes. Add JPG files the same way as PNG files. The tool works as an image to WebP converter for both formats. A JPG has already lost some detail, so keep the quality at 75 or above.

What WebP quality should I use?

Start at 80. It gives a small file and most people cannot see the difference. Go up to 95 for product photos and images with small text. Go down to 60 for thumbnails and backgrounds.

Why is my WebP larger than the original?

It happens with small, flat graphics that PNG already stores well, and with JPG files that were saved at a low quality. Lower the quality, or keep the original file. The converter marks any file that got larger.
