SVG to PNG converter

This SVG to PNG converter turns a vector file into a PNG image in your browser. Choose an SVG file or paste the code, set the width in pixels, keep the transparent background or switch to white, then download. The file never leaves your device.

How to use the SVG to PNG converter

  1. Add your SVG. Click the box to choose a file, drag a file onto it, or paste SVG code into the text area.
  2. Set the width. The converter starts at the size written in the SVG. Type a width in pixels, or tap 1x, 2x or 4x. The height follows, so the artwork is never stretched.
  3. Pick a background. Transparent keeps the empty areas clear. White fills them, which suits documents and email.
  4. Download the PNG. The preview, the pixel size and the file size update first, so you know what you are getting.

The conversion runs on your device. Nothing is uploaded, so it is safe for client logos and artwork that is not public yet.

How the tool converts SVG to PNG

An SVG is a set of drawing instructions. A PNG is a grid of pixels. To convert SVG to PNG, your browser draws those instructions onto a canvas at the size you ask for, then saves the pixels. The drawing is done fresh at that size, so a high resolution PNG is as sharp as a small one.

Output height = Output width × SVG height ÷ SVG width

Worked example

A logo is saved as an SVG that is 300 wide and 120 tall.

  • At 1x the PNG is 300 by 120 pixels.
  • At 2x it is 600 by 240 pixels. That is the size to use for sharp phone and laptop screens.
  • At 4x it is 1200 by 480 pixels.
  • Type a width of 1000 and the height is 1000 × 120 ÷ 300 = 400 pixels.

Some SVG files, icons above all, have a viewBox and no width or height. They have a shape and no fixed size. The converter starts those at 1,024 pixels wide, so an icon with a square viewBox comes out at 1,024 by 1,024 pixels.

The largest output is 8,192 pixels on the longest side. If you ask for more, the converter stops at that size and tells you.

SVG, PNG, WebP or JPG?

Format How it stores the image Transparent background Best for
SVG Shapes, sharp at any size Yes Logos and icons on websites
PNG Pixels, no quality loss Yes Logos in documents, apps and social profiles
WebP Pixels, small files Yes Photos and graphics on web pages
JPG Pixels, some quality loss No Photos

Keep the SVG on your website when you can. It stays sharp on every screen and is usually the smaller file. Make a PNG when a program does not accept SVG, such as slide decks, email signatures, app stores, marketplaces and social networks.

If the PNG is going on a web page, run it through the PNG to WebP converter afterwards to cut the file size.

Tips for a clean PNG

  • Fonts. Text in an SVG is drawn with fonts installed on your device. If the font is missing, the browser swaps in another one. Convert text to outlines in your design app before you export the SVG.
  • Linked files. Photos and fonts that the SVG loads from another address are not drawn. Embed them in the SVG first.
  • Size for the job. For sharp screens, export at twice the size the image is shown at. The aspect ratio calculator works out a matching width and height.
  • Dark pages. A logo that sits in a white box on a dark page was exported with a white background. Switch back to transparent.
  • Colors. PNG keeps the exact colors in the SVG. To read a color code from your brand palette, use the hex color picker.

How this converter was checked

Built by Rasel Hakkani, WordPress developer at Swift Web Dev. The converter was tested in Chrome with SVG files that have a fixed size, files with only a viewBox and broken files. Each downloaded PNG was opened and its pixel size, transparency and file size were compared with what the page shows. It has not been tested in every browser.

SVG to PNG converter questions

Is the SVG to PNG converter free?

Yes. It runs in your browser with no sign up and no watermark. Your file is read on your device and is never uploaded to a server.

Does the PNG keep the transparent background?

Yes. Transparent is the default, so every area that is empty in the SVG stays clear in the PNG. Choose White if you want a solid background instead.

How do I get a high resolution PNG from an SVG?

Type a larger width, or tap the 2x or 4x button. The SVG is drawn again at the new size, so the PNG stays sharp. The limit is 8,192 pixels on the longest side.

Why does my text look different in the PNG?

The font named in the SVG is not installed on your device, so the browser used a fallback font. Convert the text to outlines in your design app, export the SVG again and convert that file.

What size is the PNG if my SVG has no width or height?

The converter reads the viewBox to get the shape and starts at 1,024 pixels wide. You can type any other width and the height follows.

Can I convert several SVG files at once?

No. The converter handles one file at a time so you can check each preview. Adding a new file replaces the current one.
