Grade calculator

This grade calculator turns your points or your test answers into a percentage and a letter grade. Add your assignments, or type the number of questions and how many you got wrong. The result updates as you type.

How to use the grade calculator

  1. Points. Use this mode as a class grade calculator. Add a row for each assignment, then type the points you earned and the points possible.
  2. Test score. Use this mode as a test grade calculator. Type the number of questions and how many you got wrong.
  3. Read the result. You get the percentage, the letter grade and the numbers behind it.

Rows you leave empty are ignored, so you can add work that is not graded yet and fill it in later. The assignment name is only there to help you keep track.

Grade calculator points formula

A grade from points is one division. Add up every point you earned, add up every point possible, then divide.

Grade % = Total points earned ÷ Total points possible × 100

Worked example

You have four grades: homework 46 out of 50, a quiz 18 out of 20, an essay 85 out of 100 and a unit test 41 out of 50.

  • Points earned: 46 + 18 + 85 + 41 = 190.
  • Points possible: 50 + 20 + 100 + 50 = 220.
  • Grade: 190 ÷ 220 × 100 = 86.36%, a B.

This is not the same as your average grade. The four percentages are 92, 90, 85 and 82, and their plain average is 87.25%. The points method gives 86.36% because the essay is worth more points, so it counts for more.

Test grade formula

Test grade % = (Questions − Wrong answers) ÷ Questions × 100

On a 40 question test with 6 wrong, you got 34 right. 34 ÷ 40 × 100 = 85%, a B.

Easy grade chart

Find the number you got wrong on the left and read across to the length of your test.

Wrong answers 20 questions 25 questions 40 questions 50 questions
0 100% 100% 100% 100%
1 95% 96% 97.5% 98%
2 90% 92% 95% 96%
3 85% 88% 92.5% 94%
4 80% 84% 90% 92%
5 75% 80% 87.5% 90%
6 70% 76% 85% 88%
8 60% 68% 80% 84%
10 50% 60% 75% 80%

The letter grade uses the common scale: A is 90% and up, B is 80% to 89%, C is 70% to 79%, D is 60% to 69% and F is anything below 60%.

Which grade calculator do I need?

Things to check

  • Ungraded work. Leave the row empty. A zero counts as a missed assignment and pulls your grade down.
  • Extra credit. Type the bonus points as earned and 0 as possible. Your grade can go above 100%.
  • Rounding. The calculator does not round up to the next letter. 89.5% shows as a B. Your teacher may round it to an A.
  • Different scales. Some schools set an A at 93% or use plus and minus grades. Go by the percentage if your scale is different.

How this calculator was checked

Built by Rasel Hakkani, WordPress developer at Swift Web Dev. The results were checked against hand-worked answers, including extra credit above 100%, rows left empty and the cut-off points between letter grades.

Grade calculator questions

How do I calculate my grade from points?

Add up the points you earned on every assignment. Add up the points that were possible. Divide the first number by the second and multiply by 100. With 190 points earned out of 220 possible, your grade is 86.36%.

How do I calculate a test grade?

Subtract the number you got wrong from the number of questions. Divide that by the number of questions and multiply by 100. On a 25 question test with 4 wrong, you got 21 right, and 21 ÷ 25 × 100 = 84%.

What letter grade is my percentage?

On the common scale, 90% and up is an A, 80% to 89% is a B, 70% to 79% is a C, 60% to 69% is a D and anything below 60% is an F. Check your syllabus, because some schools use different cut-offs.

Is my average grade the same as my points grade?

Only when every assignment is worth the same number of points. If they are worth different amounts, the bigger assignments count for more. Adding up points gives the grade most teachers report.

How do I add extra credit?

Add a row, type the bonus points as points earned and type 0 as points possible. If the bonus is part of an assignment, add it to the points you earned for that assignment instead.

Is the grade calculator free?

Yes. It runs in your browser, needs no account and does not save or send your grades anywhere.
