How to count days between two dates

  1. Start date. Pick the first day. It starts on today’s date.
  2. End date. Pick the last day. It can be in the future or in the past.
  3. End date counted or not. Leave it off to measure the gap between the two dates. Turn it on to count both the first and the last day, which adds one day.

The big number is how many days are between the dates. Under it you get the same span as weeks and days, months and days, years, months and days, working days, weekend days and hours.

Need the opposite? Tap Add days to a date, pick a date and type a number of days. You get the date you land on and its day of the week. A minus number counts back, so you can find the days from a date in either direction.

The formula

Every date is a position on the calendar. The number of days between two dates is the later position minus the earlier one.

Number of days = End date − Start date (+ 1 if you include the end date)

Worked example

How many days between dates 1 January 2024 and 1 March 2024?

  • 1 January to 1 February is 31 days, because January has 31 days.
  • 1 February to 1 March is 29 days, because 2024 is a leap year.
  • 31 + 29 = 60 days.

Count the end date as well and the answer is 61 days. Here is the same 60 day span in other units.

Measured as Result
Days 60
Weeks and days 8 weeks, 4 days
Months and days 2 months, 0 days
Working days (Monday to Friday) 44
Weekend days 16
Hours 1,440

1 January 2024 was a Monday. Sixty days is 8 full weeks, which holds 40 working days, plus Monday to Thursday of the ninth week. That gives 44.

Things worth knowing

  • Which days are counted. By default the count starts on the start date and stops the day before the end date. Monday to Friday of the same week is 4 days. Include the end date and it is 5.
  • Work days between dates. Working days are Monday to Friday. Public holidays are different in every country, so they are not removed. Subtract the ones that apply to you.
  • Months are uneven. A month is counted from a day to the same day in the next month. If that day does not exist, such as 31 February, the last day of the month is used.
  • Leap years. A year divisible by 4 has 29 days in February. Century years only count if they divide by 400, so 2000 was a leap year and 2100 is not.
  • No time zones. The tool works with whole calendar days, so clock changes never add or drop a day.

How this calculator was checked

Built by Rasel Hakkani, WordPress developer at Swift Web Dev. The counts were checked in three time zones, across a daylight saving change and across leap years. Working day counts were compared with a day by day count.

Days between dates questions

How do I count the number of days between two dates?

Subtract the start date from the end date. By hand, add up the days left in the first month, the full months in between and the days used in the last month. From 1 January 2024 to 1 March 2024 that is 31 + 29 = 60 days.

Does the count include the end date?

Not by default. The tool measures the gap between the two dates, so Monday to Tuesday is 1 day. Turn on the option to include the end date if you want both the first and the last day counted. That adds 1.

How are working days counted?

Every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday in the span is a working day. Saturdays and Sundays are weekend days. Public holidays are not removed, because they differ by country and region.

Does the calculator handle leap years?

Yes. It uses the real calendar, so 29 February is counted in leap years such as 2024 and 2028. A span that crosses a leap day is one day longer than the same dates in a normal year.

What if the end date is before the start date?

You still get the number of days. The tool shows the count as a positive number and tells you that the end date is in the past compared with the start date.

How do I find the date a number of days from a date?

Switch to Add days to a date. Pick the date and type the number of days. The tool shows the date you land on and its day of the week. Type a minus number to go back in time.
