Weighted grade calculator
This weighted grade calculator works out your class grade when homework, quizzes and exams count for different amounts. Type each grade and its weight. If some work is not graded yet, it shows what you need on the rest.

How to use the weighted grade calculator
- Category. Name each part of the class, such as homework, quizzes or the midterm. The name is optional.
- Grade. Type your percentage in that category.
- Weight. Type how much of the class grade that category counts for. Your syllabus lists it.
- Target grade. Type the class grade you are aiming for. It is used when your weights add up to less than 100%.
Add a row for every category and remove the ones you do not need. If a category has no grade yet, leave its grade empty. The calculator treats it as work still to come.
Weighted grade formula
Multiply each grade by its weight, add the results, then divide by the total weight you entered.
Weighted grade = (Grade 1 × Weight 1 + Grade 2 × Weight 2 + …) ÷ Total weight
Worked example
Your class has four categories. Three are graded and the final exam, worth 35%, is still ahead.
| Category | Grade | Weight | Grade × Weight |
|---|---|---|---|
| Homework | 92% | 20% | 1,840 |
| Quizzes | 85% | 20% | 1,700 |
| Midterm | 78% | 25% | 1,950 |
| Total | 65% | 5,490 |
Grade so far: 5,490 ÷ 65 = 84.46%, a B.
What you need on the rest
Needed average = (Target × 100 − Sum of Grade × Weight) ÷ Remaining weight
To finish the class with 85%, you need (85 × 100 − 5,490) ÷ 35 = 3,010 ÷ 35 = 86% on the final exam. A perfect final would bring you to 89.9%, so a 90% is just out of reach.
Weighted average grade vs plain average
The plain average of 92, 85 and 78 is 85%. The weighted average grade is 84.46%. It is lower because the midterm is your weakest grade and it carries the most weight.
The letter grade uses the common scale: A is 90% and up, B is 80% to 89%, C is 70% to 79%, D is 60% to 69% and F is anything below 60%.
Tips for a grade calculator with weights
- Work out each category first. If a category is made of many assignments, add up their points in the grade calculator and bring the percentage here.
- Weights over 100%. You will see a warning. Usually a category was entered twice or a weight has a typo.
- Weights given in points. Divide each category’s points by the total points in the class to turn them into percentages.
- Dropped scores. If your teacher drops the lowest quiz, leave it out when you work out the quiz grade.
- Extra credit. A category grade can be above 100%. Type it as it is.
If the final exam is the only thing left, the final grade calculator answers the same question with fewer fields. For two quarters and an exam, use the semester grade calculator.

Weighted grade calculator questions
How do I calculate a weighted grade?
Multiply each grade by its weight. Add those numbers together. Divide by the total of the weights. With 90% on work worth 40% and 80% on work worth 60%, the weighted grade is (90 × 40 + 80 × 60) ÷ 100 = 84%.
What if my weights do not add up to 100%?
If they add up to less than 100%, the calculator shows your grade so far and the average you need on the remaining weight to reach your target. If they add up to more than 100%, check your syllabus, because a weight is probably wrong.
What is the difference between a weighted average and a regular average?
A regular average treats every grade the same. A weighted average lets some grades count more than others. A final exam worth 30% moves your class grade much more than homework worth 10%.
How do I find my grade in one category?
Add up the points you earned on every assignment in that category. Divide by the points possible and multiply by 100. That percentage is the grade you type for the category.
Can I enter single assignments instead of categories?
Yes. Each row can be one assignment, as long as you know what share of the class grade it counts for. Add as many rows as you need.
Is the weighted grade calculator free?
Yes. It runs in your browser, needs no account and does not save or send your grades anywhere.
