How to use the final grade calculator

  1. Current grade. Type the percentage you have in the class right now, before the final. Your school portal or syllabus usually shows it.
  2. Grade you want. Type the overall percentage you are aiming for, or tap a letter to fill it in.
  3. Weight of the final. Type how much of the class grade the final exam counts for. It is in your syllabus, often between 10% and 30%.

The calculator shows the score you need on the final. It also shows where your class grade lands for a range of final exam scores, so you can see how much room you have.

Final grade formula

Your class grade is a weighted average of two parts: everything before the final, and the final itself. Turn that around and you get the score you need.

Needed final score = (Target grade − Current grade × (100% − Final weight)) ÷ Final weight

Worked example

You have 84% in the class. You want to finish with 90%. The final is worth 25% of the grade.

  • Everything before the final counts for 100% − 25% = 75%.
  • Points already earned: 84 × 0.75 = 63.
  • Points still needed: 90 − 63 = 27.
  • Score needed on the final: 27 ÷ 0.25 = 108%.

108% is above a perfect score, so a 90% is out of reach without extra credit. With a perfect final you would finish at 88%. If you aim for 85% instead, you need 88% on the final.

What score do I need on the final?

This table uses a final worth 20% of the grade. Find your current grade on the left and read across to the grade you want.

Current grade To finish with 90% To finish with 80% To finish with 70%
95% 70% 20% 0%
90% 90% 40% 0%
85% 110% 60% 10%
80% 130% 80% 30%
75% 150% 100% 50%
70% 170% 120% 70%

Any number above 100% means that grade is not reachable with the final alone.

Things that change the answer

  • Missing assignments. If work is still ungraded, your current grade is not final yet. Ask your teacher what the grade will be once everything is entered.
  • Points instead of percentages. Some classes add up points. Divide the final exam points by the total points in the class to get the weight of the final.
  • Dropped or replaced scores. Some teachers let the final replace your lowest test. That changes your current grade, so recalculate it first.
  • Rounding. Many schools round 89.5% up to 90%. Check the syllabus before you count on it.

If your class has several weighted categories, use the weighted grade calculator to work out your current grade first. For a grade built from quarters and an exam, use the semester grade calculator. To see how long you have left to study, count the days between dates.

Final grade calculator questions

How do I calculate what I need on my final?

Multiply your current grade by the share of the class that is not the final. Subtract that from the grade you want. Divide the result by the weight of the final. With 84% now, a target of 85% and a final worth 25%, you need (85 − 84 × 0.75) ÷ 0.25 = 88%.

What if the calculator says I need more than 100%?

Then the grade you want is not reachable with the final exam alone. The calculator shows the best grade you can still get with a perfect final. Extra credit or a retake is the only way to go higher.

Where do I find the weight of my final exam?

Look in the syllabus or the grading section of your course page. It is listed as a percentage of the class grade. If the class uses points, divide the points for the final by the total points for the class.

Can I fail the final and still pass the class?

Often, yes. It depends on your current grade and the weight of the final. Enter your passing grade as the target. If the score you need is below the failing mark at your school, you can fail the final and still pass.

Does this work for letter grades?

Yes. Tap a letter to use the common scale: A is 90%, B is 80%, C is 70% and D is 60%. If your school uses different cut-offs, type the exact percentage instead.

Is the final grade calculator free?

Yes. It runs in your browser, needs no account and does not save or send your grades anywhere.
